Last Election Update 2008

I am off to the Republican Party party. As I leave the states that have been called do not look good for America. I am not truly convinced that some of the states that have been called will be reversed as was Florida in 2000. I can't imagine the people of Pennsylvania would really support a man who made so clear that he despises everything about them and seeks to destroy an industry that supports so many of them, their families and their neighbors and friends. At this point PA has been called with exactly zero percent of the vote counted. We'll see.

At this point an American hero still has a chance -- albeit, if the states have gone the way the networks have called them, it's a long shot -- and I will sign off remaining optimistic.

I will write tomorrow about my beliefs about the meaning of this election, what it says about America and what it means to the future of the world. For now, the election is far from over and I implore everyone who still can to get out and vote.

Mr Sayet, you are one of a shrinking number of decent and honorable men. The people have chosen the leader of their country as if it were just another episode of American Idol. The superficiality of Obama supporters is profound. Please keep up your excellent work.

It's looking VERY unlikely that we'll win this one. Hopefully we can manage to retain enough seats in Congress to prevent some of the destructive policies Obama has planned. An Obama presidency is scary, but what's more scary is the uneducated masses that voted him in - uneducated on what really happens when Governments go socialist. We are in for it now. Prepare yourselves.

Mr Sayet, you are one of a shrinking number of nutjobs and deniers of the truth. The people have chosen the leader of their country by seeing through all the lies, hate and bigotry you have seemingly dedicated the rest of your life to spreading. The sudden awakening of the American people is profound. Go to hell, I'm sure you'll end up seeing a lot of people you know over there.

"...some of the states will be reversed..." !!!

There aren't enough states out there where your theft and thuggery would prevail and reverse one of the greatest and most uplifting moments in American history...the country that your kind hates and repudiates.

He can't imagine that Pennsylvania.....blah blah blah...would give Obama a landslide of then percent.

Poor, sick, weak asshole.

You have been repudiated in one of the greatest landslides in our country's history as your monstrous, little chimp of a president slinks away with the LOWEST RATINGS in AMERICAN history...I wonder why?

In the meantime, the "racists" put Murtha back in in a major victory, and voters threw Chris Shays out in New England, cleansing it of one of the last remaining GOPs.

Hey Evan,
So a new President has been elected and we as Americans have to wish him well but also we have to hold him to the high ideals of the office. I hope Obama is everything we as a nation need him to be. So now he'll get a chance to prove himself and either rise to the challenge or prove all the skeptics were right. I for one will be listening with an open mind but a critical ear.

The next 77 days will be interesting...

Plus, you can be proud of the fact that you are in the patriotic minority of Americans who don't hate America.

Congratulations to the winners of this historic election. May the support you provided our last president be visited upon the current president elect a thousand fold!

Dora said...

Should not you provide to Obama the kind of support you demanded from the left when Bush was in power? Would it not be hypocritical to not do so, in other words, to demand unquestioning devotion to your president on pain of being called a traitor, but not to provide the same devotion to barack obama that you demanded for your guy?

Anonymous said...

Obama has closed the deal.

Anonymous said...

What does "unquestioning devotion" have to do with treason? What does "unquestioning devotion" have to do with anything?

America does not require "unquestioning devotion" of any of its' citizens during either peacetime or wartime.

In fact, America has until now been governed on the principle's inherent in the practice of "negative" liberty.

Unquestioning devotion is something one demands under progressive and "socially just" models of "positive liberty". And until you and Barack change the Constitution to reflect this more "progressive" Constitutional interpretation, Achilles can choose to sit out or support whatever fights he wants to. He just can't go give aid and comfort to the Trojans, as you and your ilk chose to do. Traitors.

I can hardly wait for the application of your remedy, pierrepoint.

To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscover'd country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.--Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remember'd.

This must begin with either a change of command at the highest levels or our current leaders must embrace a bold new direction," Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., said in a statement moments after Obama clinched the election. Obama victory sparks cheers around the globe 05 Nov 2008 Barack Obama's election as America's first black president unleashed a renewed love for the United States after years of dwindling goodwill, and many said Wednesday that U.S. voters had blazed a trail that minorities elsewhere could follow. People across Africa stayed up all night or woke before dawn to watch U.S. history being made, while the president of Kenya -- where Obama's father was born -- declared a public holiday. "This is the fall of the Berlin Wall times ten," Rama Yade, France's black junior minister for human rights, told French radio.

World leaders quick to congratulate new US president 05 Nov 2008 Many world leaders have applauded Barack Obama's election victory. European Commission President José Manuel Barroso used the occasion to call for a new deal between the United States and the rest of the world in order to solve problems such as the credit crisis. French President Nicolas Sarkozy wrote a letter to Mr Obama congratulating him on his "brilliant victory." He said: "The American people have chosen change, openness and optimism."

Obama's Win Eclipses National News In Britain 05 Nov 2008 Britons awoke Wednesday to headlines like the Daily Express’ "A New World Dawns," and The Independent’s "Mr. President" in bold print below a full-page picture of Barack Obama wearing a winning grin. From all-night television coverage to special, late editions of the morning papers, not printed until most polls had closed, the U.S. election has eclipsed all national news here.

Look for a few weeks of hilarious shit like this coming from the drowning GOP:

Palin spent more on clothes than previously reported, McCain aides furious at her ‘outrageous profligacy.’»
In a new 50,000 word article on the presidential campaigns that will come out tomorrow, Newsweek reports that Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) spent far more on clothing than the $150,000 reported last month. According to a preview by Politico’s Mike Allen, “McCain’s top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy“:
One senior aide said that Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three suits for the convention and hire a stylist. But instead, the vice presidential nominee began buying for herself and her family — clothes and accessories from top stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.. According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill. Palin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards. The McCain campaign found out last week when the aides sought reimbursement. One aide estimated that she spent ‘tens of thousands’ more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband.
Newsweek reports that McCain “rarely spoke to Palin during the campaign, and aides kept him in the dark about the details of her spending on clothes because they were sure he would be offended.”

Might as well pull of the drink cart and enjoy the last couple of minutes as this plane goes down. This is the first time in history that we've elected a president that has the same experience that most law graduates have. This is going to almost be fun. Talk about flying blind by the seat of your pants. If you love roller coasters or the high wire without a net then this next four years is going to be your kind of party. We're headed for both economic AND foreign crisis. WOW!!! A double whammy, no need to watch any more episodes of Survivor or the Amazing Race because to get your thrills all you’re going to have to do is watch the news. Under President Bush, sure for the first few years all you had was a silly old war, but at least the economy was going strong. Toward the end of Bush’s presidency, the Iraq war is pretty much, for all intents and purposes, over and now the economy is in the toilet. But with Obama, there’s no need to despair, we’re going to get both at the same time. Get your popcorn ready, and all you Obama supporters if you have any more of that Kool Aid left, now’s the time. We’re in for one hell of a ride.

Buyers remorse is a bitch ain't it folks.

Obama's performance with white voters Posted: Tuesday, November 04, 2008 9:43 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray

One of the biggest secrets to Obama's success tonight have been his overperformance among white voters -- especially among college-educated whites.

In 2004, Bush defeated Kerry among whites by 17 points, 58-41 percent.

But according to the exit polls so far, McCain is leading Obama among white by 10 points, 54-44 percent.

And what has helped improve Obama's margins here is among college-educated whites. Nationally, McCain is leading Obama by just one point among college-educated whites, 50-49 percent.

By comparison, McCain is leading Obama among non-college-educated whites, 58-41 percent.

Future as dark as the present for the Reich:

Young voters diverged sharply from the population as a whole, preferring Obama/Biden over McCain/Palin by 66% to 32% in the NEP. This is by far the highest share of the youth vote obtained by any candidate since exit polls began reporting results by age categories in 1976. In past elections from 1976 through 2004, young voters diverged by an average of only 1.8 percentage points from the popular vote as a whole. 2004 had set the previous record for an age gap

Thanks to George W. Bush, who crystallized the effect of conservatism on this country, there's a whole generation of truly progressive voters out there. And thanks to Barack Obama, these young voters are energized and organized, and will remain so even though the election is over.

From NewsMax:

McCain Camp Feared, Smeared Palin Over Goals
Thursday, November 6, 2008 2:42 PM

By: Jim Meyers

McCain campaign aides have launched a full-scale smear attack on Sarah Palin to blunt criticisms that they bungled a winnable election.

The McCain campaign reportedly was furious over moves by running mate Sarah Palin indicating that she was looking beyond the 2008 race and setting her sights on the White House in four or eight years.

A “civil war” raged between the McCain and Palin camps from mid-September up until McCain’s concession speech on Tuesday night, The New York Times reported.

Already McCain aides have been leaking negative stories about Palin, citing, among other stories, that the Republican National Committee paid $150,000 for clothing and accessories for her and her family.

McCain advisers have claimed she didn’t prepare for a Katie Couric interview, and she refused to take advice from the McCain campaign.

But the Times even had to acknowledge the real reason for the post-election sniping.

“But beyond those episodes may be a greater subtext: anger within the McCain camp that Ms. Palin harbored political ambitions beyond 2008,” Elisabeth Bumiller disclosed in The Times.

As late as Tuesday night, Palin was lobbying to deliver her own speech before McCain’s concession address, even though vice-presidential candidates traditionally do not speak on election night.

Palin actually had the text of her speech in hand when she met up with McCain, but was told she could not deliver it by McCain advisers Mark Salter and Steve Schmidt, according to The Times.

McCain staffers also were irked because of suspicions that Palin campaign advisers were defending her to the press.

In particular, they suspected Randy Scheunemann, a McCain policy aide who played a major role in preparing Palin for the vice-presidential debate.

CNN reported that Scheunemann had been fired from the campaign a week before Election Day for “trashing” McCain staffers to the press over their handling of Palin.

But McCain staffers Salter and Rick Davis said Wednesday that Scheunemann had not been fired.

Nevertheless, McCain advisers still believe Scheunemann was leaking negative information about McCain’s top aides and their efforts to smear Palin to William Kristol, editor of the conservative Weekly Standard and a New York Times columnist.

The “civil war” between the two Republican campaigns came to a head several days before the election, when news broke that Palin had taken a call from Marc-Antoine Audette, a comedian notorious for prank calls to celebrities.

Palin apparently believed she was talking with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

At one point, the caller suggested that Palin would make a good president someday, and Palin replied: “Maybe in eight years.”
